Set in a small town in the mid-19th century Potap Chapurin, a prosperous merchant is selling goods at a local market when he meets Maslennikov and his 20-year-old son, Yevgraf. Following a profitable deal between them, the merchants decide to celebrate and make each other's acquaintance at the local tavern.

The richest farmer and at the same time mayor Dubský and first councilman Bušek are constantly competing for supremacy. Their rivalry affects not only the fates of their families, but also the entire village, in which every problem, even the smallest one, everything that the board of directors discusses becomes a battleground for the two rivals. And it is not just about who will be appointed night watchman due to the increasing thefts. It is also about the love of Václav, Dubský's son, and Verunka, the daughter of councilman Bušek.

A Gogolian grotesque with elements of Italian neorealism underscored by Janáček's four-part harmonies. The Divadlo v Dlouhé theater consciously renounced folkloric color and psychological insight into the souls of individual characters and focused primarily on a comedic view of everyday Czech life, in which vanity and personal interests often play a key role. Director Jan Borna based his production on Miroslav Macháček's famous adaptation, which, however, underwent minor changes in the staging by the actors of the Divadlo v Dlouhé theater.

On the road to airport before emigrating to Paris Russian scientist are visiting his native village. There he is meeting with his friends and relatives which cause some funny and sad situations.
